What is a borderline personality disorder?

Borderline Personality Disorder ( BPD) is a disorder that affects our personal relationships and relationships with others, our ability to handle stress, and/or trauma and the ways we think about ourselves. The most common symptoms of this disorder are extreme emotional distress, impulsivity, low self-esteem, significant trouble in social relationships, difficulty sleeping, irritability, and difficulty relating to other people. In general, we often view our behaviour as erratic or irrational and we can have feelings of self-consciousness, confusion, or depression that results from such behaviour. A person who has this disorder can experience problems with their relationships, school and even work, but usually doesn’t exhibit any significant problem with his friendships, family, or romantic relationships. Often, however, this disorder manifests itself in adulthood as problems with adult interpersonal skills and interactions with older adults. Because these issues, it can lead to difficult experiences in education and careers as well. Some people with a borderline personality disorder may be very shy, but this doesn’t mean they don’t talk about themselves or are not able to communicate effectively with others. As a result, many individuals with this disorder engage in drugs, alcohol abuse, and other harmful behaviours to cope with their emotions. Although all types of borderline disorders have different treatments for each individual, some forms of therapy can help, whereas others only provide temporary relief. What is BPD?

Borderline Personality Disorders are a broad group which includes a wide range of problems ranging from social anxiety to severe mental illness, including eating disorders and depression.

Borderline personalities are characterized by a high degree of anxiety, depression, stress tolerance, impulsivity, interpersonal problems, and suicidal thoughts. They also have high emotional distress and anxiety, which they use to deal with what they perceive as their own difficulties. Other characteristics of this disorder include an inability to maintain healthy relationships and relationships with others, and excessive impulsivity. Many commonly observed issues in Borderline personalities are low self-esteem, difficulty sleeping, and difficulty maintaining friendships with family members. What is my diagnosis?

The first step is to determine if you have ever taken medications for Borderline Personality Disorder. Borderline Personality Disorder isn’t always considered to be dangerous, but sometimes it is, especially when combined with other psychiatric problems. You are generally assigned a goal to meet your goals and expectations; the primary goal should be helping yourself improve your quality of life. You can ask your therapist what he or she recommends to receive treatment, including whether medications should be part of your treatment. Borderline Personality Disorder and Its Symptoms

Borderline Personality Disorder is defined as a disturbance causing a great amount of distress and disruption in your communication, mood, and/or ability to function in ways consistent with your identity. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), Borderline Personality Disorder is classified as “an abnormal or excessive pattern of emotional expression” which is persistent and recurring. These criteria allow for classification according to severity; mild, moderate, moderately severe, severe, and extreme disorders. At least 75 per cent of the time during treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder the patient will show some sign of depressed mood and/or impaired self-esteem at the same time. Others will describe problems sleeping, staying awake, increased irritability, or other problems. The DSM-IV-TR states that, although having borderline disorders does not guarantee that someone is going to commit suicide, they are likely to experience major distress so long as they feel their problems could cause that. On average, people with borderline disorders exhibit problems interacting with others, a constant desire to change their appearances or sense of self, and problems performing tasks that were previously done in a normal manner. People with this disorder also tend to exhibit symptoms like anxiety, low emotion regulation and stress intolerance.

How Does My Current Mood Affect My Treatment Plan?

When I receive treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder, I feel that I have more freedom during my sessions and when I am at home because I know I can express myself freely without fear of being judged for my moods and emotions. With the proper support system set up and support, I make clear that I understand that I can speak openly with the therapist about my moods and emotions and not face judgement or ridicule. I always try to understand that I can have moods that I do not want to share with anyone else, but I also have to accept that it is okay to have moods that I want to share with others. My therapist regularly shares my moods with other patients who might be experiencing similar problems so I try not to judge my moods or emotions to others. All patients with borderline disorders often talk openly about their moods and emotions to their team. Even though some may not agree with me, I always respect them because it helps us see each other’s struggles in a more relatable way.

What are the side effects and risks?

The short-term risks with this type of treatment are the chance of some minor side effects like feeling tired or sleepy, occasional fluttering of the eyes, a headache that lasts less than 2 days after the end of treatment, nausea, vomiting, bloating, abdominal discomfort, fatigue, and insomnia. People with borderline disorders may also have long term effects like having problems with sleep, increased sex drive and desire to have children.

Who Should Get Counseling?

Individuals who are facing major emotional distress due to BPD may benefit from seeking immediate help from a licensed psychologist or physician. Persons who have frequent behavioural patterns that appear to follow a predictable pattern, and who are undergoing major physical or psychological injury may also benefit from treatment from a professional psychologist. Family members may also benefit from counselling and support so they can understand symptoms and treatment plans and how to best care for the individual. Counsellors and physicians may also provide referrals for assistance to those with questions or concerns regarding the treatment process. Counsellors, physicians, volunteers, and family members can all provide information about Borderline Personality Disorder and refer you for further evaluation and treatment. If you need additional help while you are receiving treatment, referral services may be available through sites like Psychology Today, websites, call centres, local chapters of national organizations or local mental health care facilities, etc.

Borderline Personality Disorder and How To Treat The Problem

Borderline Personality Disorder isn’t just limited to the negative aspects of living with it like depression and anxiety. There are also several effective ways to treat the condition. An initial assessment followed by psychotherapy and/or medication can be helpful to manage both the short-term and long-term effects of the disorder. Psychotherapy, which involves treating problems in relationships using psychological methods, is becoming increasingly popular as people seek solutions that treat the underlying reasons for their behaviour. Most therapies for borderline personalities include psychotherapy techniques. During the therapy process, counsellors can help you establish a therapeutic alliance with the therapist, and together through sessions, they can learn new solutions to problems you may have been experiencing. After the initial assessment, you can then begin engaging in therapies like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), behavioural therapy (BT), or individual and interpersonal therapy (IAT). CBT focuses on changing your emotional reactions and the things which are keeping you stressed and anxious. MI employs strategies that focus mostly on increasing acceptance of your emotions. BT consists of programs that teach people to learn coping skills like relaxation and mindfulness so that they stay in healthier relationships and relationships of their choosing with others. Lastly, IAT is used by experts in treating borderline personalities to help people reduce impulsive thought processes and increase their self-control so they can become better managers of their emotions. What is anxiety?

Anxiety disorders are mental health conditions that include a whole plethora of conditions, which range from constant anxiety to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social phobia and major depressive disorder (MDD).

These disorders consist of several psychological or neurological conditions that bring on physical symptoms such as headaches, fatigue and depression. They can be accompanied by other medical problems such as sleep, dizziness, nausea and vomiting too. All these types of disorders interrelate with one another to varying degrees. In some cases, they are linked to brain dysfunction (psychological) and in others to psychiatric disorders, but it is important to know more about the symptoms of each type before attempting to diagnose as you will discover the most reliable form of help.

Types of Anxious Illnesses and Their Causes

Anxiety disorders can be classified into 4 main broad groups:

Generalized anxiety disorder — the general term for all kinds of anxiety disorders is GAD. It can refer to different kinds of anxiety disorders and often is used interchangeably with the American Psychiatric Association’s popular name. Some types of GAD include panic disorder, agoraphobia, somatoform pain disorder, trichotillomania and generalized anxiety syndrome. Generalized anxiety disorder is mainly characterized by increased levels of anxiety over the course of time. Severe cases may cause an inability to function normally in daily life and sometimes require professional medical assistance. Panic disorder is characterized by extreme feelings of fear and dread arising from impending danger. There is usually a sudden onset of intense worries about a specific situation which occurs abruptly. People who have this condition often develop disabling panic attacks. Agoraphobia is commonly used to describe the fear of being near certain places or situations such as elevators, public transit, aeroplanes or train stations. It is considered a chronic illness since there is no clear timeline to determine whether the disorder has been present for at least six months. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a kind of anxiety disorder that generally consists of feeling low levels of happiness and self-esteem for at least two weeks, accompanied by persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities and thoughts of hopelessness. It tends to affect both genders. Generally, the person will have normal to elevated moods within several days, followed by worsening distress. The initial symptoms tend to subside after two to three days and last for about four weeks. In severe cases, the individual can lose his or her sense of security and personal identity. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) causes PTSD after experiencing significant events, including death, serious injury or severe change in your life. PTSD can arise from anything that scares you or makes you feel scared, like witnessing the rape of children or being exposed to abuse during childhood. It is regarded as another form of anxiety disorder and is believed to be the most stable of the ones described above. A person may experience PTSD immediately following a traumatic event (e.g., having witnessed the murder of a loved one); or on a delayed basis (e.g., if you experience grief following the deaths of loved ones). Other forms of anxiety disorders include agoraphobia. A panic attack is a sudden episode of anxiety. During a seizure, you feel very shaky, shaking and shaky, as well as choking and dizzy. These are mostly short-lasting attacks which occur when someone experiences imminent harm. While not everyone will get a seizure, some people will experience it in some way, shape or form frequently. Social phobia consists of fears about interacting with many types of life-threatening people, especially those that are scary due to their appearance or behaviour. This includes adults, children, and members of ethnic minorities. Existing research strongly suggests a genetic component underlying many symptoms of social phobia. One research study, in particular, found that close relatives of individuals suffering from social phobia disorder were more likely to have had seizures, a seizure disorder, than were individuals who did not suffer from social phobia. Another study found a strong relationship between social phobia and epilepsy. Another type of anxiety disorder that causes physical symptoms is major depressive disorder (MDD). An individual can feel depressed for at least two weeks of time over any period of anywhere from one month to two years. It is associated with feelings of hopelessness, guilt and loss of interest in activities, as well as insomnia, weight loss and sleeping difficulties. Both MDD and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are associated with sleep disorders, usually in the form of difficulty falling asleep (anxiety can interfere with the development of sleep and sleep patterns). However, not only do people with MDD suffer from sleep disorders but also from the decreased need for sleep in general, which can lead to poor work performance and lower academic and emotional success. There are various medications available to treat panic syndrome and somatoform pain disorder (SPSD), generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder (MDD) that are effective. Although some medications are suitable for specific kinds of anxiety disorders, there is still a lot of potential for side effects such as drowsiness and dizziness as with SPSD.

Diagnosis of Anxiety Disorders

One important element of diagnosis is to use tools that accurately assess your symptoms. If your symptoms don’t fit the criteria listed above, then you should consult a psychiatrist. If you find yourself in the category of PSD, consult a psychologist. Likewise, if you are diagnosed with GAD, consult a combination of psychiatrists, psychologists and mental health professionals (such as a psychiatrist). You should always talk to a specialist or counsellor before trying medication. If you experience symptoms of ADHD, talk to someone who specializes in this area. Psychotherapy is a useful option for anyone seeking treatment for a disorder that involves the brain because it combines behavioural therapy (behavioural) techniques and cognitive-behavioural treatment (cognitive therapy).

Treatment of Anxiety Disorders

Treatment of anxiety disorders is extremely complex, involves numerous sessions and therapies and requires ongoing care. Treatment options include things like psychotherapy, behaviour therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness programs, relaxation practices, relaxation therapy, stress management techniques, mindfulness training, family counselling services, school-based interventions, occupational therapy, substance abuse treatment, nutritional advice, massage therapy, acupuncture, religious therapy, etc. Each treatment method has pros and cons so you must try them out to see what works best for you. Below are a few guidelines for selecting therapy options:

Psychotherapy – A comprehensive approach that uses therapeutic dialogue to understand your emotions and behaviours. Behavioural therapy – helps identify problems with unhealthy habits, as it applies lessons learned from behavioural therapy to treat anxious behaviours. Cognitive-behavioural therapy – It helps improve behaviours and thought processes through education and learning skills. Relaxation techniques – Used with anyone dealing with anxiety disorders, relaxation techniques are helpful in managing stress and improving physical and emotional well-being. Stress management techniques – They focus on enhancing relaxation, handling anxiety and reducing distress. Individual therapies – Provides individual support for individual goals and feelings of anxiety. Family members and friends also play a great role in helping the client learn more about their own disorders. For instance, a child who suffers from eating disorders might benefit from a parent or caregiver who shares how much he or she eats. Religious/spiritual therapy – Helps individuals to learn new ways of relating. Prayer therapy – Encourages prayer in response to the anxiety symptoms. Meditation practices – Help individuals to meditate, focusing on breathing techniques to ease anxiety. Yoga and meditation programs – Help individuals relax the body through posture exercises and relaxation. Energy therapies – Teaching clients energy to increase strength, reduce anxiety and improve breathing techniques and heart control. Alcoholics can benefit from motivational methods based on the principles of sobriety programs.

Prevention of Anxiety Disorders

It is estimated that between 10% and 30% of anxiety disorders are undiagnosed. These types of disorders will vary depending on age and other factors. In order to prevent anxiety disorders and other psychological problems, it is vital for people to take steps to manage stress and anxiety, which are discussed below.

Exercise is considered something that can enhance one’s resilience, mental health and sleep quality. Other benefits of exercise include improved body composition and improved blood flow. Many people have started exercising either as part of regular exercise routines, on their own or as a way to cope with stress. Exercise in its long term effect is not just going to help relaxation but also can help prevent future occurrences. Exercise improves blood circulation, which increases oxygen throughout the body, relieves inflammation and reduces blood pressure. Exercise is linked to high levels of the hormone serotonin, which can slow the rate of anxiety progression. As you grow older, your mind becomes more developed and smarter, it can process data faster and more efficiently, less prone to distraction. Therefore, starting young is especially important since our brains mature faster in this period of life. Additionally, physical activity in its natural setting is also tremendously important since the mind gets an extra boost if your workout is performed in nature. Regardless of where you go, just getting up and moving is enough to trigger relaxation. Moving can range from walking to playing a sport like a basketball to working out or simply walking outside while watching TV. When I was a little girl, I was a very active child. I used to go play outside without fear of my parents not being around me. They taught us basic things that would help us grow stronger physically, emotionally, and mentally. We learned these lessons through stories from elders in our society and also by watching movies. One day when we were home, my mother asked me if I went on an adventure with friends? My answer was “no”. It started as just playing outside but gradually ended up being more adventurous than many of our childhood games.

My family consists of only one brother who is the best at math and I have the best memory when it comes to math. There are three children, two girls, two boys, and a baby girl. As a result, there was a lot of time for them to explore their surroundings and get more involved and learn new things along the way. However, there were times when they didn’t even know what going out outside was all about so eventually went back inside. And the following day, my mom saw my brother playing outside at night and asked him to let her know. She said, “you shouldn’t be playing outside because you’re always with your friends”. I remember thinking it was weird because I wasn’t there. But then I had another idea, which was that she could be out looking at flowers and look at the weather. This story scared me a little and I told her that we should stay indoors. Because I thought the weather was no longer conducive to playing outside but I knew, this would definitely not happen because we were too close to each other. Therefore, I began to play with my sister and brother outside where we did not have any other peers. I started learning some skills like walking and running from my uncle’s side. Slowly and slowly, my life changed. There was a period when I wasn’t able to attend school by myself.

There were several months of the pandemic when we didn’t say a word to anyone except for our teachers and grandparents. We didn’t see our families very often, especially on holidays or birthdays. No one ever came or called us out on it. My son’s name used to go something like “it will never come back to normal” or “everything will be fine”. Those few months are still there and there are days when everyone wants to go outside but we don’t want to feel uncomfortable doing so. For others, this became worse when the government ordered us to wear masks during certain activities. Not knowing what to expect when travelling outside became another problem they suffered from. Some people just were able to understand why it happened but still, some were unable to put themselves in places where they weren’t really required. It affected both men and women all around the globe. Women were forced to travel to work abroad due to financial concerns while men were trying to find new ways to earn money. Most of our communities lost social cohesion.

I experienced different situations in my life. On one hand, I used to have friendships with kids who I didn’t know. But I never felt comfortable travelling alone until the lockdown started. Friendships with strangers got less frequent and I began worrying about my own well-being so I decided to start reading online to help me understand the situation and learn how and why something like this happens. A friend who had travelled out of China told me a story: when he was a kid he travelled to Indonesia with his parents and siblings. Once his parents died due to sickness and his sister was diagnosed with cancer, he felt lonely and almost depressed. His parents were very strict and used to beat him if they found he was spending time alone. He started reading about selfless acts like those that helped those who weren’t wealthy. By reading articles, he understood to stay positive and grateful for what he has. In a conversation, a friend told me about a man named John Hocknell who spent most of his time outside while working for the army. He had given up his job and decided to return to his homeland. When his father passed away, he had been looking for someone to support him and his wife. After meeting him, he wanted to return to Ireland.

Many of us are lucky that we have family members and friends who understand that we don’t need to travel to other countries to live. They try their best to make sure we can go out and experience great experiences without exposing us to danger. Others take advantage of the current pandemic situation to force more government orders for people to mask up, avoid large gatherings, or minimize contact with others. Some also think that it is okay to ignore rules made by international bodies like WHO that are based on science and evidence and therefore can violate national laws that protect citizens from infections during outbreaks. To be honest, the reality is a lot more frightening for many people than it could ever have been before. Many of us, including adults, children, and adults alike, have become anxious about everything that has been happening lately. Being forced into isolation, isolated from loved ones, and separated from friends because of this virus and its effects has resulted in anxiety for many people.

Throughout the last month, I spoke with a friend who travels regularly and her reaction to the current quarantine situation is very similar to mine. She had booked a train ticket to travel this week but just after she received notification about the first case of coronavirus and then boarded the train and stayed seated throughout the trip to Amsterdam and Amsterdam airport, and when she arrived, the entire plane became sick. In another conversation, a girl shared that as soon as they got off the flight, the whole plane was infected with COVID-19 and she and her husband are quarantined. Her mother is ill right now. Now she has returned back to the United States and the trip is cancelled but this doesn’t mean that her journey home will be ruined, but it does change how her family and her country are affected. She said that everyone who travelled to Italy during the early stage of the virus was quarantined. If I ever get another chance to travel, I’ll definitely check my itinerary, and if I’m fortunate enough to travel to Europe, I will always follow CDC guidelines.

The news of covid 19 kept me awake at night, but also relieved me for months. Even though I knew and suspected the spread of the virus in Canada but I never received concrete information until the lockdown started. All of a sudden, I couldn’t sleep at night; I began getting panic attacks and had to stop eating. So much so, that I had to visit doctors at least once a week to have some relief from anxiety. Eventually, everything got better and now there aren’t any restrictions and we all travel internationally but there are still certain countries that continue to experience severe outbreaks.

I think that we should pay attention to our own health. When you are afraid of what may go wrong and you are unsure of how long it will be till it does, you may not be taking precautions as much as necessary and making yourself vulnerable to catching covid 19. Everyone needs to take precautions that limit exposure and increase our physical strength so we can easily resist infections and stay healthy and happier.

So, let’s begin this article by understanding what belief is and why we should believe in what we do have!

Belief

Belief means everything when we talk about beliefs. Beliefs usually describe our thoughts and actions. They are what we want to do and believe in. There are countless examples of what we believe in. Like, for example, “I will never do something bad. This shows that my mind and the way I think makes me feel good and that my actions are making all these actions and decisions better.” We normally follow certain rules and norms of doing things based on our knowledge of what those rules and norms are.

In other words, we follow them like kids. You know that kid you can’t walk into your house without first stopping by the door, and your parents can be trusted to make sure you listen to their instructions in the household? That is based on your belief in yourself. It also serves as a reminder to always act according to who you are in life and not someone else and in turn to stay consistent with what you are trying to accomplish. These may not seem very important yet, but it does serve as inner support throughout everyday life that helps us in various ways. For instance, it tells us how to deal with difficult circumstances we are faced with in life. If we keep going through things with no fear and just believing in ourselves, then we also learn how to cope with situations that require strong thinking. Such as, we need to think through scenarios that may cause conflict, like what would happen in case I don’t take action as per the set guidelines and the way things are done is wrong? Sometimes we go through things at the cost of ourselves and others. By holding ourselves accountable and knowing what is right, we teach ourselves good self-control and a more peaceful environment.

But, what’s actually wrong when we have these feelings or beliefs? Do we really understand what our actions would do to those around us? Are we making the right decisions based on what we know is right? I believe we do not know the answer to these questions, but it’s not always possible to know what is wrong as well.

What is a disorder?

Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (TPD) is when someone experiences a number of symptoms that are not consistent with normal functioning. The key difference between the two terms ‘disorder’ and ‘disruptive’ is associated with the fact that the symptoms experienced are less serious than those experienced by TPD. In fact, TPD tends to be more severe than the disruptions witnessed in other disorders. What is a disorder?

Let us begin by defining the term “disruptive attitude”. It is defined as a behaviour or a habit that has adverse effects on one’s well-being but that no longer serves the overall needs of one. For example, someone may want to smoke fewer cigarettes than they previously did, but have increased concern and worry about getting lung cancer because smoking is not healthy.

In addition to having a negative impact on one’s life, it is also noted that disruptive habits can cause distress, loss, emotional challenges or even a feeling of worthlessness. At times disruptive behavioural patterns are done so out of necessity or for long periods of time; for example, if there is some kind of emergency, people may seek help from strangers. Another example that comes to mind is a young woman who wants to lose weight but decides against it. Both disruptive and non-disruptive behaviours can affect one’s physical and emotional well-being. If either of them does not fit into the context and goals of your life then this may be a sign of something like stress, depression, anxiety disorders, gambling disorders, eating disorders or any other type of mental health problem you might experience. It is important to note here that despite some signs of problems or distress, not all disorders have a similar diagnosis.

What Causes Disruptive Behavior?

There are many factors to consider which include the individual’s personality traits and upbringing as well as stressors and past trauma. These factors play a big part in determining whether behavioural patterns become disruptive or not. Many times interruptive behaviours cannot be resolved with medication, only with behavioural therapy the ability to manage and reduce the disruptions can be realized. A number of interventions can be used depending on the severity of the problem. Therapy helps treat behavioural problems like smoking, drinking, eating disorders, stress disorders, anxiety disorders, etc. Behavioural therapy involves behavioural therapy that focuses primarily on behavioural habits. Behavioural therapy is a highly structured form of treatment that works to correct behavioural problems as opposed to therapeutic psychology. Counsellors offer instruction, guidance and counselling, behavioral therapy is typically open-ended and may involve discussions that include emotional assistance as well. As discussed above, behavioural therapy can be used individually to treat behavioural problems and it can be combined with other types of therapy to enable a full recovery. Several groups provide evidence that group therapy is effective for improving emotional and behavioural health as well and has been shown to be effective for managing depression, anxiety disorders as well as stress disorders. However, evidence supporting the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy is scarce and small, especially for stress disorders. Medication has proven to act as a substitute treatment for behavioural disorders and is effective when provided regularly and for a year or so.

There is still a lot of research being conducted in the field of psychology and behavioural medicine, however, there is little evidence of their efficacy other than anxiety and stress disorders. Additionally, it is very rare to use medications or behavioural therapies concurrently; therefore behavioural treatments are most effective when the disorder has disappeared. Studies to date have shown that treatment for smoking and alcoholism disorders, stress disorders, binge eating and depression are effective when both are present. Treatments for both smoking and smoking cessation are equally effective when applied separately. Even though behavioural therapy seems to be the most effective treatment for smoking cessation, nicotine replacement therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness training programs are shown to be effective alternatives for smoking cessation and stress reduction. Mental health treatment has developed for smoking-related disorders, stress disorders, bipolar disorder, and panic disorders and although these disorders do not have a specific treatment smoking cessation and medication treatment are proven effective for smoking cessation, stress reduction and anxiety reduction.
